So I’ve been whiling away the hours preparing for interviews and reading blogs and pinning and tumbling and shopping and drinking and dancing and reading and drawing and avoiding the gym and generally being a bit rubbish at documenting things on here, sorry!!!!
HOWEVER, there is a big development of sorts in the project; finally, a brief!!!!!

Design brief
Create a fabric that explores a bold spirit of adventure.
Key words: Exploration, adventure, freedom, fantasy, fear, fearless, pioneer, expedition, unknown, beyond, uncharted, discovery.
Settings: Turbulent ocean floors, mountain crevices, deep jungles, endless deserts, ancient metropoleis, untraveled territories, unknown worlds.
Have you ever been sitting on the bus or at your desk when your mind begins to wander – in your imagination you are somewhere on the other side of the world, scaling a craggy pink-red granite mountain, following the call of a chimpanzee high up in humid jungle treetops, diving to the bottom of the ocean where coral is the colour of candy floss and your heart drums as weird creatures appear from beneath forgotten ship wrecks?
We are asking you to bring your imaginary adventures out of the realm of the fantastic and put them onto fabric.
The People’s Print have created an inspirational how-to tutorial, showing you how to build a dreamscape in collage form and turn it into a fabric design. Feel free to use the knowledge and ideas within the tutorial, or stray as far from it as you like.
What we will be looking for:
Colour; the colours you use will influence the whole DIYcouture collection; prompt/provoke our palette.
Imagination; let it run wild. Cause a commotion.
Design; create a good looking repeat, appropriate for cutting edge clothing.
How to enter:
1.Read through this design brief. Have a look at our two mood boards - “I have no fear of depths” and “We shall not cease from exploration”- on Pinterest and download our collage moodboard to get in the mood.
2.Download The People’s Print tutorial for inspiration, ideas, and step-by-step instructions showing you how to create a digital half-drop repeat pattern.
3.Create your repeat, either following the tutorial or following your own path. If you use the tutorial, you will need to gather some materials to create a real life collage before you sit down at your computer.
4.Save your repeat unit in high resolution 300dpi, in case you win! But to upload to the Facebook competition page save a copy in lower resolution (e.g 150dpi) and image size about 10cm x10cm and don’t forget to show the repeat in the form of a pattern. If you don’t have a Facebook page but would like to submit, email your pattern to diycouture @ googlemail.com.
5.Upload your low resolution Jpeg image of your pattern to the dedicated competition page on Facebook, for all to see.
Winning designs:
The winning designs will be selected on Friday March 22nd. Please upload your designs before midnight GMT on Thursday March 21st. Winners will be selected taking into account - but not solely based on - number of ‘likes’ and comments left under designs.
The winners will each receive a copy of the popular 2nd edition ‘Digital Textile Design’ book by Melanie Bowles, a copy of ‘DIY Couture; create your own fashion collection’ by Rosie Martin, as well as vouchers to spend at BeFab Be Creative, the UK’s first fully accessible digital fabric printing bureau.
The clothing in DIYcouture’s seasonal collections serves as inspiration to those using our instructions to create truly unique garments from scratch. The winners will also have the satisfaction of seeing their fabric designs turned into garments, which will take pride of place on the DIYcouture homepage throughout the summer.
Go wild. Have fun. Good luck.

Just an afternoon of internet-trawling in preparation for some rigorous more serious research and observation (definitely not just looking through blogs….)
I’m so inspired it’s almost too much to handle, need to make sense of all these ideas buzzin around.

“KPIX-TV documentary presented by writer Michael McClure from 1967, about the Haight-Ashbury district in San Francisco and how it is increasingly recognized as a center for the growing ‘hippie’ counter-culture movement. As narrator Rod Sherry puts it: “Some call Haight-Ashbury another bohemia, like the Left Bank, Greenwich Village and others … But it’s more like Brigadoon: a magical land that appeared only yesterday and may be gone tomorrow. But if it lasts, the effect on the rest of society could be far reaching. And that’s why the outside world must try to understand what is happening here.” Includes scenes of McClure visiting the Psychedlic Bookshop, the Print Mint and the Straight Theater (where The New Salvation Army Band and a rehersal from his play ‘The Beard’ are seen). Also features views of The Grateful Dead relaxing inside their house at 710 Ashbury Street and of McClure walking though the neighborhood and socializing with painter Mike Bowen and others. This film was produced by Alan Goldberg, written by Jim Harwood and directed by Dick Williams. The music is by The New Salvation Army Band.”
